Naples Daily News

The Guadalupe Center of Immokalee will bus 300 children to Snyderman's Shoes Of Naples this week to get them new shoes. In Bonita Springs, a chapter of the national organization Shoes that Fit has put children into properly fitting clothes and shoes for five years.

The Guadalupe Center’s 17th annual back to school shoes program assists impoverished families. The children are given a new pair of shoes and a pair of socks just in time for school. In addition, several other children who could not make the bus trip will also be given shoes, according to Terrie Aviles, the client services director at the Guadalupe Center.

When “the program started, we noticed children were going to school with torn shoes or shoes that had been passed down from their siblings,” Aviles said. “So, we saw the need for the program. And it is a great program.”

The children were referred through various social service agencies or have participated in Guadalupe programs before. Snyderman Shoes gives the Guadalupe Center the shoes at cost and the organization uses private donations to pay for the shoes.

The children came off of the bus about 10 at a time and waited while Snyderman Shoes general manager Becky Joyce attended to them.

As the children sat quietly, swinging their legs, waiting their turn to be measured for shoes, it was easy to notice the ones they were wearing.

Some were worn at the toes. Others had missing or makeshift laces.

But as soon as they stepped into a pair of white, black, blue or cotton candy pink shoes, their faces lit up.

Trinidad Ponce, 8, said his new shoes made him ready to go to third grade at Eden Park Elementary School in Immokalee.

“I like them,” he said.

Pants two sizes too small and shoes with holes in the soles will not do as children prepare to start a new school year.

“Children need clothes for school,” said volunteer Diana Vacca. “You don’t want them to go through that embarrassment.”

Needy students in Collier and Lee counties are getting a boost from local organizations as they get ready to head back to school.

The Guadalupe Center Opens Second Site

Guadalupe Center's Early Education Program is now available on the campus of Lake Trafford Elementary School. In partnership with Collier County Public Schools, children including those of Collier County Public School, teachers and parents on Guadalupe's wait list will attend. The Martin Foundation campus will bring high-quality early childhood education to 33 children and their families.

Students Begin School on the Right Foot

More than 250 Immokalee students received new properly fitting shoes and school supplies, thanks to the support of Laces of Love, Snyderman’s Shoes of Naples, Russell’s Clambakes & Catering, Seminole Casino Immokalee and many other generous individuals, communities and other organizations. The smiles say it all.

Summer College Experience Changes Tutor Corps Student's Life

“These two weeks at Miami were great and unforgettable", says Jannet Frias who spent two weeks at Miami University in Oxford, OH this summer. "I was able to expand my horizons and build new relationships. I am thankful for Tutor Corps because now I am considering going out of state for college."

"Guadalupe Center achieves excellent results from their educational programs that effect positive change in young people's lives. We are inspired by the older students who have an inner strength and the determination to educate themselves and find a better life. We also like that Guadalupe Center has a very sound governance.”
